Frequently asked

Why does GradeLab need both the front and the back?+

Every professional grading service evaluates both faces, and the back is often where a card loses points — centering and edge wear frequently differ from the front. Grading only the front would systematically over-report your card's condition.

How accurate is the estimate?+

GradeLab measures centering to the pixel, which is precise and repeatable. Corners, edges, and surface are assessed by machine-learning models, which are good but not infallible. Every result carries a confidence score, and when confidence is low we show a range instead of a single number. This is an estimate to help you decide what's worth submitting — not a substitute for professional grading.

Is this an official PSA or BGS grade?+

No. GradeLab is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to PSA, BGS, SGC, CGC, or any other grading service. Our estimates have no standing with those companies and cannot be used in place of their certification.

Why can't it identify my Magic or sports card?+

Grading works identically for every card — it needs no database at all. Identification is different: Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! have card data we can use under a proper licence, while Magic and sports cards don't have a freely licensable source. For those we read the text off the card and ask you to confirm. Each confirmation improves matching for everyone.

Why won't the app let me take the photo?+

GradeLab won't shoot until lighting, focus, angle, and steadiness are all good enough. A poor capture produces a confidently wrong grade, which is worse than no grade at all. Follow the on-screen prompt — it always shows the single most important thing to fix.

Should I take the card out of its sleeve?+

Yes. Sleeves and toploaders refract light at the border and corrupt centering measurements. GradeLab tries to detect this and will warn you.

What lighting works best?+

Bright, even, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight and single overhead spotlights, which create glare on glossy cards. GradeLab uses your flash for part of the scan — that's intentional, and it's how surface scratches are separated from print lines.

Do my photos get uploaded?+

No. All analysis happens on your iPhone. Photos stay on your device and, if you use iCloud, sync to your own private iCloud account that we cannot access.

How do I cancel my subscription?+

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and select GradeLab. Cancelling there stops the renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
